Graphite tape is used in some cases as a gland packing for small valves, but typically in different flange sealing applications. Graphite is easily malleable and has excellent tightness. Therefore, the graphite strip is well suited as a flange seal, e.g. for damaged flanges or joints where the bolt load is limited. The tape is also available without an adhesive surface.
Graphite is suitable for use in almost all media except highly oxidizing media. Graphite has excellent resistance to high temperatures and is the most widely used material in power plant applications, especially in steam plants. The cold resistance of graphite is also good and is used in some cryogenic applications. The good properties of graphite include good compressibility, very long storage time and easy machinability.
